Capitol Perspectives: A time for setting legislative priorities
By: Phill Brooks - January 4, 2021
The start of Missouri’s legislature during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic raises questions about how lawmakers will adjust to the realities of this rampant virus. Just visualize a state Capitol during a normal legislative session with legislators, legislative staffers, lobbyists, agency officials, visitors and reporters crowded into committee rooms and narrow hallways. Because […]
Capitol Perspectives: Teach your children well
By: Phill Brooks - December 17, 2020
This column is inspired by a 1970 song by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young for parents to “teach your children well.” I’ve been thinking about that song often as I’ve wondered how my relatives who were stuck at home during World War II dealt with restrictions similar to what we’re encountering with COVID-19. They tried […]
Capitol Perspectives: I live in my district

In fact, Missouri law provides a several-week delay after the election to assure accuracy of the […]
Capitol Perspectives: Further reflections on Gov. Mel Carnahan’s death
By: Phill Brooks - October 30, 2020
The recent thoughts written by others about the tragic death of Gov. Mel Carnahan two decades ago have prompted me to add some personal details. There was something about Carnahan that touched all of us who covered the statehouse during his time in the Capitol. The informal, completely transparent and laid-back personality of Carnahan were […]
Capitol Perspectives: The better angels of our nature
By: Phill Brooks - October 23, 2020
Before proceeding with this column, I want you to think about what you’ve read, seen or heard from the candidates running for state office during this campaign season. How often have you heard detailed proposals to deal with the major issues facing our state like COVID-19 including steps to reduce infection, addressing complications of reopening […]
